Penn State has a long and glorious tradition in angling sports. George Harvey began teaching around 1933 and taught the first college credit course in 1947. Both Harvey and his successor (and pupil) Joe Humphreys are internationally known as Penn State faculty. They produced three books (at least one translated into Japanese),and numerous articles and videos. Joe hosted the first nationally syndicated TV program dedicated to flyfishing.
If you haven't seen Joe's latest video "A Casting Approach to Dry Fly Fishing in Tight Brush" I heartily suggest that you buy it, rent it, or as a last resort, steal a copy!! The techniques demonstrated 'over the shoulder' will absolutely amaze you and the final few moments with Joe and George together will sincerely touch your heart.
The program has had its own unique Presidential connection. Presidents Eisenhower and Carter were both attracted to the reputation of the program and faculty, returning many times to fish and visit with George and Joe. Anywhere flyfishers gather, Penn State is well known. Certainly the Angling program has had tremendous national exposure in media through television, People Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Fly Fisherman, Fly Rod and Reel and other sporting publications. Recently the program was featured in Town and Gown and the Penn Stater.
Over the years, Penn State has received contributions to help support this program. With the help of others, we have been able to establish a formal endowment. Given the history, tradition and obvious popularity of the sport at Penn State, it is my hope that we can continue to go forward and prosper.
