A Centre County Sheetz will be out of service for about five months while the store is demolished and rebuilt.
The gas station and convenience store at 2850 Benner Pike in Benner Township will close on July 7, according to a sign on the store’s windows. The new Sheetz is expected to open in December, Sheetz PR Manager Nick Ruffner wrote in an email to StateCollege.com.
In addition to a new 6,139-square-foot building with indoor and outdoor seating, the rebuilt Sheetz will add a drive-through and a new car wash, Ruffner wrote. The gas station will have the ability to fuel 12 vehicles at one time.
Employees of the Benner Pike store will be offered positions at nearby Sheetz locations during the closure, Ruffner wrote.
The current store on Benner Pike opened in 2011.
“We look forward to serving our customers with this new, updated building,” Ruffner wrote.
Rebuilds to meet updated design models aren’t unusual for Sheetz. In Centre County, the company’s stores on Shiloh Road, Valley Vista Drive and North Atherton Street in Patton Township have all been reconstructed in the last decade.
The reconstruction is the latest new project on the busy Benner Pike corridor. A new McDonald’s has just opened at the Paradise Road intersection, where nearby another developer is also looking to build an Arby’s restaurant.
Construction is getting underway on two new hotels: a Tru by Hilton next to G.M. McCrossin and across from Bellefonte Lanes, and a dual-brand Avid and Candlewood Suites at the Amberleigh Lane intersection.
Directly across from Sheetz near the Eagle Point intersection, rival Wawa has submitted plans for one of its first Centre County locations.
