Walmart is planning an expansion for one of its State College area stores to create a new pickup area for online orders.
Plans for the Walmart Supercenter at 373 Benner Pike include a 3,440 foot addition on the north side of the building, next to the patio and garden center, for the online pickup and delivery storing and staging space, according to a presentation to the College Township Planning Commission on Tuesday
The Planning Commission unanimously voted to recommend that the township council approve the final land development plan.
The store’s current designated pickup area is located on the south side of the building near the grocery entrance. Michael Meyers, of project engineer Dewberry Engineering, said the designated parking spaces for online pickup in that area will be restriped for general parking.
At the north end a new canopy will be installed and 45 spaces — up from 12 at the current area — adjacent to the expansion will be designated for online pickup, according to the engineering plans for the project. The proposed project does not increase the overall number of parking spaces on the property.
In addition to the expansion and restriping in the parking lot, the plan includes new signage and painting for wayfinding and traffic safety.
Walmart announced in October 2023 that it planned to increase space for its growing pickup and delivery business at stores nationwide as part of a larger plan to upgrade stores across the country.
The land development plan will go before College Township Council for final approval at an upcoming meeting before construction can commence. The plan is not on the agenda for council’s next meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday.
