A downtown State College pizza shop that survived the borough’s aborted attempt to take its building by eminent domain this summer is now facing eviction for unpaid rent.
Owners of the building posted an eviction notice for Canyon Pizza, 219 E. Beaver Ave., and its related business Canyon Wings, 229 E. Beaver Ave., on the properties this week.
According to the notice, the business has not paid its monthly rent of $3,100 from June through October and owes $15,500 by Oct. 20.
Building co-owner Jay Horgas, who also co-owns The Brewery in the same building, said he has “been very accommodating,” but “$15,000 is too much money.”
Canyon Pizza did not respond to a message seeking comment.
Horgas said he was not certain what would happen next but that he had posted the property and was sending a certified letter to begin the process of evicting Canyon Pizza and Wings. The business is on a month-to-month lease, he said.
Canyon Pizza started at the corner of East Beaver Avenue and Locust Lane in the 2000s and moved to the building in 2016.
In August, State College Borough Council approved a resolution authorizing a declaration of taking for the building to construct a replacement for the Pugh Street Parking Garage. The move took Horgas and fellow building and Brewery co-owner Ray Rockey by surprise, and after weeks of community backlash council rescinded the decision on Aug. 21.
In addition to the Brewery and Canyon businesses, the building at the corner of East Beaver Avenue and McAllister Alley also houses Music Mart.
