Canyon Pizza in downtown State College closed, at least temporarily, on Tuesday because of health code violations.
After a sign posted in the window of the restaurant at 219 E. Beaver Ave. stated it has been closed “by the order of the State College Borough Neighborhood and Community Services/Division of Health,” an inspection report dated Nov. 15 was filed with the state Bureau of Food Safety detailing 13 violations.
The violations listed in the report:
- “Hood system is not adequate to remove heat and/or grease, as evidenced by condensate and/or grease collecting on the walls, ceilings, and fixtures. Hood is in need of a professional cleaning as required by the Centre Region Property Maintenance Code.”
- “Food Preparation and trays kept on table under wall with peeling paint and drywall damage.”
- “Commercially processed ready to eat food, deli ham located in the 3 door reach in cooler, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened or date to discard.”
- “Manual 3 comp sink warewashing equipment observed with build up of filth and food residue and not cleaned before use, and frequently throughout the day.”
- “Floor in the walk in cooler a Non-food contact surface was not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Evidenced by an accumulation of oil and flour residue.”
- “exhaust fan window, in the area, is open, unscreened, and does not protect against the entry of insects, rodents, and other animals.”
- “Handsink, toilet, walls, and floors are soiled in the employee bathroom.”
- “Exposed food preparation observed in kitchen area under dirty ceiling, pipes, and, ducts with visible dust hanging from the ceiling, and subject to potential contamination.”
- “3 bay sink basin / equipment has sharp internal angles / corners, rather than rounded. Welding repair was not sufficient and has created sharp angles and non smooth areas. Sink weld at base is also insufficient and leaking water.”
- “Lids on Pizza table are wrapped in duct tape that is not a smooth cleanable surface. Replace lids on Pizza table.”
- “Pizza dough trays stacked with oil residue still on in clean stacked area a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Pizza prep cooler has standing water, mold and food debris in the interior base. Dough Mixer covered in dried on oil and flour.”
- “Walk in Cooler walls are peeling, FRP board missing on back of door, floor is unsealed wood and is not a suitable durable, smooth, and cleanable surface.”
- “Floors, walls, and ceiling in the kitchen, food prep, and warewashing area of the food facility is extremely dirty, dusty, and in need of cleaning. Wall under the handsink, has a hole, or is broken and in need of repair. Wall adjacent to the pizza prep table is made of rough brick and is not a smooth cleanable surface. Repair with a sealed smooth cleanable surface. Ceiling tiles missing in the front and rear of the establishment, and need replaced with smooth cleanable ceiling tile that are designed for food establishments.”
It is unclear when Canyon Pizza will reopen.
