A national flooring retailer announced on Friday that it is closing all of its stores, including a location in the State College area, less than a month after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
LL Flooring, which has a store at 1524 N. Atherton St., wrote in a letter to customers on Friday that it is going out of business and is conducting liquidation sales at its more than 400 locations over the next 12 weeks.
A closing date for the Centre Region store has not been announced. For now, it is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
The State College store is among 21 LL Flooring locations in Pennsylvania.
Formerly known as Lumber Liquidators from its founding in 1993 until 2022, LL Flooring filed for bankruptcy protection in August and initially planned to close 94 stores. The State College location was not among the initial closures.
The company has been attempting to find a buyer in an effort to resolve its debt obligations, but has been unable to do so.
“We have actively negotiated with multiple bidders, but these discussions have not resulted in an offer, with the necessary financing, that would maximize the value of LL
Flooring,” CEO Charles Tyson wrote in the letter to customers. “As a result, it is with a heavy heart that we must let you know that we are going to begin the process of winding down LL Flooring’s business and closing all of our stores.
“This is not the outcome that any of us had hoped for.”
The company had nearly 2,000 employees nationwide, according to its bankruptcy petition.
In addition to hardwood flooring, LL Flooring’s products include hybrid flooring, waterproof vinyl, laminate, bamboo, cork and tile, as well as tools and accessories.
