A national pet store chain will open a State College area location this week.

Pet Supplies Plus will open at 9 a.m. Friday at 277 Northland Center in Ferguson Township, a spokesperson confirmed. The location is the former home of Koko FitClub.

The store is locally owned and operated by Peter Manbeck, a longtime securities lawyer turned entrepreneur who is opening his first Pet Supplies Plus location.

“After many years as a lawyer, I am looking forward to this new chapter where I will be interacting with the State College community every day,” Manbeck said in a statement. “Giving pet owners everything they need to keep their pets healthy and happy is a very fulfilling prospect that I could not wait to get involved in.”

Pet Supplies Plus will offer pet foods, equipment and toys. It also will have grooming services, a self-service pet wash station, community room and carry-out service for heavier items.

“Each team member is extensively trained in the areas of natural and holistic foods and are able to answer a broad range of questions about dogs, cats, birds, reptiles and fish,” according to a news release.

Customers are welcome to shop with their dogs. They can also sign up for the free Preferred Pet Club, which offers regular coupons on products they purchase frequently and monthly specials.

Manbeck said he plans to partner with local animal shelters and nonprofits to host adoption events, fundraisers and pet food and product drives.

Store hours will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Though it will be open for business starting Friday, the store will host a grand opening event the weekend of May 15-16 with prize giveaways and special sale prices. The weekend will include complimentary pet nail trims and dog washes and a chance for shoppers to win a one-year supply of dog or cat food.

On May 15, mystery scratch cards for amounts of $5 to $50 will be given out to customers throughout the day. On May 16 the first 100 customers will receive a coupon for a free small bag of dog or cat food, valid for any brand in the store.
