A new bubble tea shop has opened in downtown State College.

Located at 262 E. Beaver Ave., The Whale Tea opened in the former location of Frutta Bowls on the ground floor of The Edge . Frutta Bowls closed in 2020 during the pandemic after a little over a year in business.

The Whale Tea will serve a variety of beverages, including traditional milk tea, whale crystals, crème brûlée, fresh fruit milk tea, milk foam fresh tea, slush, oolong tea and more. Prices range from $4.75 to $7.25 depending on the size and type of tea.

The shop is open noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

The Whale Tea originated in Nanjing, China, and has about 300 locations in the country, as well shops in Singapore. The franchise has five locations in Connecticut and one in Boise, Idaho, with plans to expand to other parts of Connecticut and the New York/ New Jersey region.

The Whale Tea joins Poke Fresh, a Hawaiian poke bowl restaurant, as new restaurants opening this week in State College.
