With a wildly successful Reverse Car Drawing in the rearview mirror, Coaches vs. Cancer Penn State now turns its attention to its annual 5K Run/Walk.
The event will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Penn State Golf Courses.
According to CVC Co-Director and 5K Event Chair Mike Martin, the 5K has been taking place for “20 years or so,” although “it moved from campus to the golf course just a few years ago.”
“Twelve years ago, we started Team Ream at the 5K as a way to support Brandon (Ream’s) battle with a huge turnout of his family and friends. We still have a large group of Brandon’s family and friends that run every year,” Martin said.
Runners are able to register in advance online. Cost is $25 per runner. Event check-in/registration begins at 8 a.m., with the race start scheduled for 9.
It will be a picturesque fall 5K.
“This year the race will be back at the Penn State Golf Courses,” Martin pointed out. “The course runs out of the golf course, along Blue Course and back through Corl Street to the course parking lot.”
According to CVC Co-Director Wendy Pelky, the 5K is important to CVC’s overall effort.
“All of the year-around CVC events are important in our effort to raise money to support education, outreach and research by the American Cancer Society and to supply funds to the Bob Perks Cancer Assistance Fund to be distributed locally to families to assist with their non-medical expenses during their fight against cancer,” Pelky said.
The 5K is CVC’s final fundraising event of 2023.
“This event is important to carry on the teamwork of CVC and Team Ream for one common goal to beat cancer,” Martin said.
This year, the 5K will feature first-year Penn State men’s basketball head coach Mike Rhoades, his staff, team managers and players. All are expected to join CVC and the 5K registrants on race day.
