The Downtown State College Improvement District recently received a Townie Award from the Pennsylvania Downtown Center for the Calder Walkway Lighting Experience.

PDC hosts an annual statewide Townie Awards gala to recognize communities and individuals for revitalization projects and events. Out of nearly 200 member organizations, 12 received awards during this year’s conference in Harrisburg.

DSCID won the award for Physical Improvements & Design: Public Space Improvements.

“It’s wonderful to be recognized for the hard work and collaborative efforts that went into this beautification project,” DSCID Executive Director Lee Anne Jeffries said in a news release. “Many thanks to the PDC for the work they do every day to champion downtowns across the state.”

The Calder Walkway project is a dynamic lighting attraction on Calder Way between Fraser and Pugh Streets that includes a colorful light display, a community vegetable garden and interchangeable public art murals. It also included a backdoor design competition.

The initiative is supported by a grant from the Happy Valley Adventure Bureau and co-sponsored by the Borough of State College.
