The YMCA of the USA recently honored U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson, R-Howard Township, for his support of the Centre County chapter’s efforts to address food insecurity.
Thompson was named a “YMCA Congressional Champion” on Feb. 15.
“The Y is fortunate to have elected leaders such as Rep. Thompson,” Mel Curtis, director of the YMCA of Centre County Anti-Hunger Program, said in a news release. “His leadership in addressing hunger is just one example of his work to improve lives throughout the state of Pennsylvania and the rest of the country.”
Thompson “has been very supportive” of the YMCA of Centre County’s Anti-Hunger Program in assisting with the organization’s new educational farm, food distributions and providing information to sustain food chains, according to the release.
He was instrumental in securing a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant for the Travelin’ Table, a mobile feeding program that brings food and resources to communities in the local Y’s service area through a partnership with CenClear Child Services.
Thompson also was on the front lines at food distributions and helping with food donations during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the release.
Curtis and YMCA of Centre County CEO Scott Mitchell will present the award to Thompson on Tuesday at the the Y’s No Kid Hungry Food Center in Philipsburg.
