Students from State College Area School District’s Delta Program were recently recognized with the Pennsylvania Governor’s Civic Engagement Award.
The award is presented by the Pennsylvania Departments of State and Education to celebrate the efforts of high school students to engage and educate their peers about getting involved in the voting process.
Graduating seniors Lorelai Radzanowski and Ana Helfen Wood spearheaded the drive to register 85% of eligible Delta Program students to vote, qualifying for the Gold Level School Award. Statewide, only 18 schools qualified for the Gold Level. Silver Level Awards are also presented to schools with at least 65% of eligible students registered.
Eli Carey also earned the Poll Worker Award for helping staff a local voting location during the primary election in April.
“These prestigious awards celebrate the efforts of Pennsylvania high school students to register their eligible classmates to vote and to hopefully launch them on a lifelong habit of voting,” Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt said in a statement. “Engaging the next generation of voters is crucial to the future health of our representative democracy.”
Teacher Lynda Hauman supervised the students in their work, and the League of Women Voters of Centre County provided assistance.
