A veteran Centre County educator will be the next principal at Ferguson Township Elementary School.
The State College Area School Board on Monday approved Kara Treweek to take on the role following the retirement of current principal Shelly Buckholtz in June.
Treweek, who has been with SCASD since 2018, has been dean of students at Ferguson Township Elementary for the past year. She was one of the first two elementary deans of students in the district, along with Becky Kabala at Park Forest Elementary.
“As a lifetime resident of Centre County and an alumni of State College Area School District, I am proud to have the opportunity to lead a school within my hometown,” Treweek said in a statement. “I am looking forward to forming strong relationships with students, families, community members and faculty and staff centered on belonging. I look forward to leaning into the collaborative spirit and instructional strengths that exist within the amazing Ferguson community to continue the drive for all students to succeed.”
Treweek previously taught kindergarten at Gray’s Woods Elementary. Before joining SCASD, she taught first grade at Pleasant Gap Elementary School in the Bellefonte Area School District from 2005 to 2018.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Lock Haven University in 2005 and a master’s degree in education focusing on curriculum and instruction from Wilkes University in 2010. She received her principal certification from Shippensburg University in 2023.
In selecting Treweek for the position, the search committee considered input from Ferguson Township Elementary teachers and staff, parents, board members and administrators, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education Danielle Yoder said.
Treweek will earn a salary of $125,000 per year as principal, according to human resources recommendations included in the agenda for Monday’s school board meeting.
She will begin transitioning to her new position through the remainder of the school year.
Treweek is one of two new elementary principals appointed by the SCASD Board on Monday night. Beth Solensky was hired to succeed the retiring Mark Feldman as principal at Mount Nittany Elementary.
