Centre County Adds 2 COVID-19 Deaths, 85 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 9,143 New Positives

Centre County registered two new COVID-19 deaths and 85 more cases of the virus on Thursday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The county now has 260 deaths attributed to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

With 128 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 33,649.

The new cases bring the county’s total to 22,997 (20,708 confirmed and 2,289 probable). Centre County also had 37 new negative test results to bring the total to 84,766.

Pennsylvania added 9,143 positives bringing the statewide total to 1,753,669. It is the largest single-day increase since January. There were 5,912 new negatives for a total of 5,917,901.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center is treating 53 COVID-19 inpatients, 12 more than the hospital’s last update on Tuesday, with seven in intensive care [+3] and seven on ventilators [+3]

The patients range in age from 27 to 95, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Twenty are fully vaccinated and 33 are not vaccinated.

Pennsylvania has 3,928 COVID-19 inpatients, 11 fewer than on Wednesday, with 837 in intensive care [-21] and 471 on ventilators [-27].

An estimated 91% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, according to a DOH calculation that considers a case as recovered if it has not been reported as a death and it is more than 30 days past the date of the first positive test or onset of symptoms.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has 39 active COVID-19 cases among inmates — three fewer than on Wednesday and the third most among state correctional institutions — and 29 among staff [+3], the highest among any SCI.

Rockview state prison has no active inmate cases [-1] and 13 among staff.

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,572 inmates are fully vaccinated, 10 are partially vaccinated and 197 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 284 are fully vaccinated and 344 are not vaccinated.

Rockview has 1,675 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 60 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 325 are fully vaccinated and 392 are not vaccinated.

Transmission level

All 67 counties in Pennsylvania are at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Thursday morning, 88,215 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated [+638 since Wednesday] and 10,457 are partially covered [-387]. Third doses have been administered to 23,892 county residents [+607].

Among the county’s entire population, 69% have received at least one dose and 52.9% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75.3% have received at least one dose and 58.6% are fully vaccinated.

Statewide, 69.3% of adults and 58.5% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

All adults are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
