Centre County Adds 24 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 1,217 New Positives

Centre County recorded 24 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday while local hospitalizations linked to the virus dropped slightly.

The new cases to bring the county’s pandemic total to 35,412 (31,415 confirmed and 3,997 probable), according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 19.9, up from 19.4 a week ago and 12.1 a month ago.

Pennsylvania registered 1,217 new positives to increase the statewide total to 2,801,534. The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 1,305, up from 1,003 a week ago and 709 a month ago.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center has three COVID-19 inpatients, one fewer than on Tuesday. None are in intensive care or on ventilators, according to the hospital’s COVID inpatient dashboard.

COVID-19 hospitalizations statewide increased for the fourth consecutive day. Pennsylvania hospitals have 506 COVID-19 patients, six more than on Tuesday, with 62 in intensive care [+1] and 38 on ventilators [+7].

Deaths

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents for the 10th consecutive day, keeping the total at 348.

With 11 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is 44,550.

Community Level

Centre County remains at the “low” community level for COVID-19 for the sixth consecutive week, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s latest update on April 14.

Community levels measure new cases, new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity to determine mitigation guidelines. At the low level, there is no recommendation for indoor masking.

Statewide, 64 of 67 counties are at the low level, with Bradford, Sullivan and Susquehanna at the medium level. At the medium level, the CDC recommends masks indoors in public for those at risk of severe illness. At the high level, universal indoor public masking is recommended.

Prison cases

Centre County’s two state prisons — Benner and Rockview — have no COVID-19 cases among inmates or staff, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.

At Benner, 1,418 inmates are fully vaccinated, 20 are partially vaccinated and 202 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 306 are fully vaccinated and 323 are not vaccinated.

At Rockview, 1,707 inmates are fully vaccinated, two are partially vaccinated and 78 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 351 are fully vaccinated and 367 are not vaccinated.

Vaccinations

As of Wednesday morning, 95,230 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 24 since Tuesday, and 14,232 are partially covered [+2]. Booster doses have been administered to 50,379 county residents [+34].

Among the county’s entire population, 70.2% have received at least one dose, 59.7% are fully vaccinated and 51.7% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75.5% have received at least one dose, 63.8% are fully vaccinated and 54.3% have received a booster.

Statewide, 77.6% of adults and 68.1% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot. All individuals 50 and older and certain immunocompromised individuals are now eligible for a second booster shot.
