Centre County Adds 33 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 3,622 New Positives

Centre County reported 33 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday to increase its total to 17,488, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Pennsylvania added 3,622 new positives. Wednesday’s updated case count also included “a large file of 5,227 old test results dating back to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic,” according to DOH, to bring the statewide cumulative total to 1,286,426. Most of the old results were from Philadelphia.

The county also reported 93 negative test results for a total of 74,886. Statewide, there were 9,768 new negatives for a total of 5,090,279.

Centre County remains at the substantial level for community transmission of COVID-19 — the second highest on the Centers for Disease Control scale — as of the CDC’s latest county-level data update on Tuesday afternoon. Neighboring Blair, Clinton, Clearfield and Huntingdon counties are at the highest level, while Mifflin and Union are also at substantial.

According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 21 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Centre County, with one in intensive care and none on ventilators — all unchanged from Tuesday.

Mount Nittany Medical Center announced on Tuesday night that because of the rise in local cases and hospitalizations, no visitors will be permitted at the hospital except in special circumstances. Additionally, one caregiver, if needed, may accompany patients to the emergency department, physician group offices and outpatient locations.

Statewide Pennsylvania has 1,617 COVID-19 inpatients, an increase of 83 since Tuesday, with 462 in intensive care [+35] and 207 on ventilators [+12]. Hospitalizations are at their highest level since mid-May.

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents, keeping its total at 230.

With 33 new deaths statewide, Pennsylvania’s total is now 28,131.

An estimated 94% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, according to a DOH calculation.

As of Wednesday morning, 78,895 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated and 6,426 are partially covered. According to the CDC, about 59% of the county’s entire population has received at least one dose.

Vaccination appointments for ages 12 and older are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.
