The State College Area School Board on Monday approved the appointment of a new principal at Gray’s Woods Elementary School.

Gregg Wilson succeeds Kris Dewitt, who left the district to take a principal position in Michigan.

Wilson arrives at Gray’s Woods with 12 years of administrative experience, including serving from 2015 until February as principal of Richland Elementary School in Johnstown. Richland Elementary was recently recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence for its performance during the 2022-23 school year under Wilson’s leadership.

“I am truly honored and excited to join the Gray’s Woods Elementary School as the new principal,” Wilson said in a statement. “I look forward to meeting all of the stakeholders and learning more about what makes the school and community special. Together, I look forward to fostering growth, curiosity, and a love for learning in our school community.”

He has also worked an assistant principal at Richland High School, Indiana Junior High School and Peters Township High School, according to a release from SCASD.

“Gregg comes to us with extensive experience in elementary administration and is passionate about continuing to build Gray’s Woods Elementary’s long-standing positive culture,” Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education Danielle Yoder said in a statement. “His strengths include his collaborative approach with all stakeholders and his strong commitment to building positive relationships with students and staff.”

Prior to his time as an administrator, Wilson taught business education at Richland High School from 2004 to 2012 and was an advisor for multiple extracurricular activities.

He also served in the Army National Guard for eight years, during which time he rose to the rank of sergeant and served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, according to the district release.

Wilson earned a business education degree from Robert Morris University in 2002, a master’s degree in education from St. Francis University in 2008. He received his principal certification from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

His salary as Gray’s Woods principal will be $139,000 per year, according to human resources recommendations included in the board’s agenda on Monday.
