Three people are dead and three are injured after consecutive vehicle crashes overnight on Interstate 80 westbound near Milesburg.

Emergency responders were dispatched just after midnight on Tuesday to mile marker 156 in Boggs Township, where they found two tractor-trailers over an embankment and a car on its roof in the roadway, Citizen’s Hook & Ladder Co. 1 of Milesburg wrote in a Facebook post.

According to state police at Rockview, the first crash occurred when a tractor-trailer and car collided. The tractor-trailer went off the road and down an embankment, while the car came to rest along the right side of the road. The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

Another tractor-trailer then struck the disabled car. Two of the occupants of the car were ejected and died at the scene. A third suffered fatal injuries and died inside the vehicle.

A “good samaritan” who was approaching the scene of the first crash on foot was struck by the disabled car after the force of impact from the second crash, state police wrote. The pedestrian sustained serious injuries and was taken by helicopter to UPMC Altoona.

The driver of the second tractor-trailer went over an embankment and also was taken by helicopter to UPMC Altoona.

Names of the deceased and injured have not yet been released.

I-80 westbound between the Milesburg and Snow Shoe exits partially reopened at about 3 p.m. on Tuesday and all lanes were open by 5 p.m., according to a PennDOT spokesperson.

Logan Fire Company and Snow Shoe Fire Company also responded to the scene.
