A section of U.S. Route 322 in Centre County was closed for about an hour on Thursday afternoon because of downed trees as heavy thunderstorms move through the area.

Route 322 was closed in both directions between the Route 45/Old Fort exit and the Potters Mills exit from about 2 to 3 p.m., according to PennDOT and the Boalsburg Fire Company. The closure started shortly after 2 p.m.

Route 45 was also “full of trees in the roadway,” according to the fire company.

“First responders/PennDOT are working to clear the roadways,” a post on the Boalsburg Fire Company Facebook page stated. “Please be patient as we work through the activity from the storm.”

Boalsburg, Centre Hall and Alpha fire companies and Gregg Township fire police responded to assist PennDOT with the closure and detour.

Centre County, along with most of central and eastern Pennsylvania, is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m. on Thursday.

“Scattered severe thunderstorms with damaging winds of 60 mph or greater are possible this afternoon and evening,” according to the National Weather Service at State College.
