Penn State Acting Athletic Director Dr. David Joyner is leading a six-person committee to find the university’s next head football coach.
The announcement came Monday, and no timetable has been set to name a permanent replacement for Joe Paterno.
University trustees relieved Paterno of his coaching duties Nov. 9, a few days after child-sex-abuse charges were filed against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.
Joyner said his search committee will meet this week, according to a news release.
Interim coach Tom Bradley has said he ‘certainly would want the permanent job.’
Joyner, meanwhile, has said that ‘anybody’s name is in the mix that wants to apply for the head coaching job.’
Penn State President Rodney Erickson named Joyner the committee chairman. Joyner’s position on the Board of Trustees, which he’s held since 2000, has been suspended as he takes on the athletic-director duties.
Also on the committee:
- Linda Caldwell. A member of the Penn State faculty since 1995, Caldwell is the university’s faculty athletics representative and represents faculty on all matters related to varsity athletics at University Park. She must participate in searches for senior athletics-department administrators and head coaches.
Appointed by then-President Graham Spanier in 2010, she also is responsible for certifying Big Ten and NCAA eligibility for student-athletes.
- Charmelle Green. Green started her duties as Penn State associate athletic director and senior woman administrator back in July.
She came to Penn State after spending the previous six years at Notre Dame. Appointed here by former athletic director Tim Curley, Green oversaw the student-development program at Notre Dame. Her responsibilities there included providing a balanced Notre Dame experience for student-athletes. That balance included a focus on five key areas: academic excellence, athletic success, career preparation, community involvement and personal development.
At Penn State, Green replaced Susan Delaney-Scheetz, who retired March 31.
- Ira Lubert. A member of the Penn State Board of Trustees, Lubert is chairman and co-founder of Lubert-Adler Real Estate.
Lubert, also the past chairman of the United Way Campaign of Philadelphia and an active recruiter for the Alexis de Tocqueville Society of the United Way, engineered with Joyner the hiring of Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson.
- John Nichols. Nichols is an emeritus professor in the Penn State College of Communications and chairman of the Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics.
An associate dean for graduate studies and research, he previously was chair of the University Faculty Senate and a member of the Faculty Advisory Committee to the President and numerous other university committees.
- Russ Rose. Penn State’s all-time-winningest coach, Rose became the first women’s volleyball coach to lead his team to four straight NCAA championships.
In 32 seasons at Penn State, he has emerged as the NCAA leader in career winning percentage and is just the third active Division I head coach to reach 1,000 career wins. Rose, the longest-tenured coach at Penn State, also teaches a class on the ethics of coaching.
