Mount Nittany Health on Tuesday announced plans for expansions and renovations at the medical center and outpatient locations as part of an ongoing $50 million facilities investment.

“Both patients and our providers need these new spaces as we continue to grow,” Kathleen Rhine, Mount Nittany Health president and CEO, said in a statement. “We are pleased make these necessary investments to advance clinical excellence for our community and to further our mission of healthier people and a stronger community.”

The planning process will begin this fall for construction of a new “bed tower” at the hospital. The addition will include private patient rooms, along with “community, clinical and support service enhancements,” according to a news release. Planning is expected to take place through early next year.

A spokesperson said the number of beds in the new tower, and whether it would change the hospital’s total number of beds, will be determined during the planning process. The medical center is currently licensed for 260 beds.

Mount Nittany also will begin a complete renovation of the imaging department at the medical center that will result in a newly designed diagnostic pavilion on the main floor of the hospital.

“The renovation will happen in phases over the next two years, resulting in enhanced patient experience, improved staff environment, and the ability to accommodate the latest diagnostic technology,” a statement from Mount Nittany Health said.

A new inpatient dialysis unit that will provide “a greatly enhanced patient and staff environment,” will be created at the medical center in the next several months.

Already underway at the hospital are major expansions of the women and children’s unit and the clinical laboratory. Both projects are scheduled for completion in spring 2022.

Mount Nittany also is planning for projects at its physician group practices, including a new State College outpatient facility and expansion and renovation of physician group regional outreach locations.

Over the last decade, Mount Nittany Health has significantly expanded and upgraded its facilities, including the addition of the Lance and Ellen Shaner Cancer Pavilion, new operating suites, an expanded emergency department, a new cardiovascular pavilion and outpatient facilities in Mifflin County, Philipsburg and Penns Valley.
