Some segments of Pennsylvania served by the 814 telephone area code are poised to get a new area code by 2012.

Centre County, including State College, will not be affected by the change.

According to an Associated Press report, the state Public Utility Commission on Thursday approved a plan to create a new area code for Erie, Crawford, Warren, Venango, Forest, Clarion, Jefferson, Elk and McKean counties. Parts of Clearfield, Armstrong, Mercer and Indiana counties are expected to be affected, as well.

The current 814 area is expected to run out of available numbers by 2013, according to the AP report. Regulators have not announced what the new area code’s digits will be.
