Less than 24 hours after Penn State announced that sophomore guard Matt Glover had requested release from his scholarship, Penn State has confirmed that Trey Lewis has requested his release and will not play for the Nittany Lions next season.
Lewis, who sat out most of the 2011-12 season with ankle and back injuries, averaged 5.6 points a game and provided the Nittany Lions with a viable option while Tim Frazier was on the bench.
A 6-foot-1 guard out of Garfield Heights, Ohio, Lewis was Mr. Ohio Basketball runnerup in high school behind Michigan’s co-Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Trey Burke. Lewis spent time at the start of the season in Coach Pat Chambers’ doghouse, but had put forward enough effort to earn back his playing time once healthy.

“Trey and I met after the conclusion of the season and the result of those conversations was that we both felt it would be best for him to continue his career at another program,” Chambers said. “Trey is a skilled player and a nice young man. We wish him the best as he moves forward with his career and we will assist him however we can in finding the right fit for him.”
“I would like to thank my teammates and coaches for the past season at Penn State,” Lewis said. “I had a great experience at Penn State and learned a lot with the opportunity to play in the Big Ten as freshman. After thinking about my future, I think it is best for me to move on and continue my career at a program that may be a better fit for me.”
Moving forward, Penn State will now have four open scholarships for the 2012-13 season. Freshman forward Peter Alexis also previously announced his intention to transfer.
