The Penn State Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon on Sunday unveiled its 2011 logo.

It was introduced at THON’s 13th annual Family Carnival, held at the White Building on the University Park campus. Designed by Penn State student Melissa Ginsiorsky, the logo — posted to the right of this text — helps uphold the THON theme for 2011: ‘Together Without Limits,’ THON organizers said.

The image ‘depicts a young girl and boy sailing together,’ Ginsiorsky said in a statement released by THON. ‘They are united by the journey that lies ahead of them, just as all of us unite for THON. The two children are sailing towards the viewer, gazing out in optimism and determination to the infinite expanse ahead of them.

‘As a result,’ Ginsiorsky went on, ‘this logo creates an atmosphere of hope and anticipation for the future. Within the logo itself, the wake of the ship is stylized in such a way that it can represent both waves and clouds. Therefore, whether the children are sailing in the ocean or the sky, their journey truly knows no bounds. Anything is possible. The whimsical form of this logo is intended to personify the passionate and inspiring nature of THON and to embody the spirit of its individuals, families, and — most of all — the kids.’

THON, a year-round philanthropic effort, benefits pediatric-cancer patients and research. It culminates each February with a 46-hour, no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon at the university’s Bryce Jordan Center.
