Penn State on Wednesday warned students and staff about a phishing scam involving emails that appear to come from a ‘Bursar’ email address.
The messages are being sent to random Penn State email accounts, according to the real Office of the Bursar. The email states that ‘Your Payment has been processed and your tax return is ready.’
A link to ‘View Payment Detail’ goes to a bogus site that asks for Penn State WebAccess login credentials. The email is signed ‘Bursar Management PSU Management.’
Anyone who receives the email should delete it and should not click on the link or respond to it, according to the bursar’s office.
Users who clicked on the link and entered a Penn State password should immediately go to the Penn State Password Management site and change it.
If you clicked on the link and entered credit card or bank account information, contact those institutions immediately and change any related account passwords.
