The Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg will be closed to the public for more than a year as it undergoes a $3.4 million renovation.

Starting Dec. 8, the museum at 51 Boal Avenue will be closed for approximately 14 months, according to a news release from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. The museum’s archives and permanent collection will be moved to secured storage off-site during the renovations.

While the museum is closed, the grounds will remain open to the public for outdoor activities, including school programs and community events such as the Boalsburg Farmers Market. The theater also will be available for programs on a limited basis.

The modernization project will update the 56-year-old museum’s infrastructure with the goal of “ensuring the preservation of its invaluable collection and enhancing the visitor experience,” according to the PHMC.

Work will include upgrades of all doors, windows and heating and ventilation systems, installation of advanced artifact preservation controls and the addition of a comprehensive geothermal energy system.

Updates on progress during the closure will be posted on the museum‘s website, on Facebook page and Instagram account
