A Penn State student was arrested after police said he injured a woman by pushing her into a wall early Saturday morning inside a campus dormitory.
Ryan F. Gustin, 21, of Penfield, New York, is accused of assaulting the woman at around 3 a.m. in a hallway at Brumbaugh Hall, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed by university police.
The woman told police that Gustin yelled at her and then pushed her into the wall, causing her to strike her head. She had a laceration and bleeding and was rendered unconscious, police wrote. She was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center for treatment.
A witness told officers that he saw Gustin raise his hand while speaking with the woman, then heard a loud noise. The witness reported that Gustin had blood on his hands and face that he washed off before police arrived, according to the affidavit.
Police observed blood on Gustin’s pants, as well as on the pillow the woman was lying on in the hallway after the incident, according to the affidavit.
Gustin, who does not live in Brumbaugh Hall, displayed signs of intoxication, police wrote.
He is charged with one felony count of aggravated assault, misdemeanor counts of simple assault, defiant trespassing and disorderly conduct and a summary count of harassment.
He was arraigned on Saturday morning by District Judge Don Hahn and on Monday posted bail, which was set at 10% of $35,000.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
Gustin is on interim suspension from the university, according to a Penn State spokesperson. He cannot be present on university property without permission and cannot participate in university-sponsored events, including classes, while on suspension.
