Local authorities have filed criminal charges against a former UPS driver and Best Buy employee who allegedly stole more than $27,000 in electronics and then sold many the items online.
State College police filed theft and related charges Tuesday against Matthew D. Snyder, 37, of State College, for allegedly stealing packages he was supposed to deliver and then selling the items on eBay.
Police began to investigate after UPS reported in January that a 9 mm pistol shipped through the State College facility never reached its destination in Lemont. Further investigation showed a package of 10 iPhones that should have been delivered to the Best Buy Mobile store at the Nittany Mall never arrived.
Police say Snyder was to make both deliveries and previously worked as the mobile manager at Best Buy on North Atherton Street.
Further investigation showed more missing cell phones, some of which had been activated in Florida, South America, Europe and Asia. Some of those users told police they purchased the items on eBay and that eBay account was linked to Snyder, police say.
Police executed a search warrant at Snyder’s home in March where investigators allegedly seized an iPad mini and Xoom tablet. Police say the iPad mini was stolen from UPS and destined for Best Buy in December.
While police were still searching for the missing firearm, Snyder allegedly agreed to a polygraph test, according to court records. Upon arrival, Snyder allegedly said the polygraph wasn’t necessary. Instead, he allegedly told police he loaded the gun on the wrong delivery truck, and as an effort to not draw more attention to himself, he decided to ditch the gun in a dumpster.
In April, investigators obtained eBay and PayPal records for Snyder’s accounts, which allegedly show Snyder sold more than $20,000 in merchandise on eBay between January 2013 and January 2014. Some of those transactions occurred while Snyder was employed at Best Buy in Ferguson Township.
Ferguson Township police filed separate theft and related charges against Snyder for allegedly stealing more than $10,000 in items while working at Best Buy.
Stolen items included at least 28 cell phones, 10 tablets, multiple cameras and a laptop.
Snyder’s preliminary hearing is slated for June 25. Magisterial District Judge Leslie Dutchcot set his bail at $25,000 unsecured.
