Alcohol Safety Tips
Alcohol poisoning is a Medical Emergency if you suspect that someone has alcohol poisoning, even if you don’t see the classic signs and symptoms seek immediate medical care – CALL 911. Some signs/symptoms to look for include the following:
- Confusion
- Vomiting
- Seizures
- Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
- Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
- Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
- Low body temperature
- Unconsciousness, and can’t be roused
If you are drinking, make sure you eat something too. This will help you absorb the alcohol you consume, lessening your chances of alcohol poisoning and involvement in risky situations and/or behavior, police said.
Also: Know your limit; try to alternate between water or other drinks without alcohol and alcohol. Reference BAC guides for more information.
Combining energy drinks with alcohol can be dangerous and will not lower your blood alcohol content and may even cause you to drink more alcohol than you would normally consume.
Drugs and alcohol do not mix. This includes over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medication.
Never leave your drink unattended or accept a drink that was already opened or not made in front of you.
Personal Safety
- When out at night, have a friend walk with you.Stick to well lit areas.
- Avoid isolated areas.Arrive at and leave parties with friends.
When Hosting a Party/Event
- Invite a manageable number of guests and know whom you are inviting. Do not publicize the event on social media sites.
- Inform your neighbors and encourage them to contact you if there is a problem. If you are comfortable doing so, be sure to leave your name and phone number so they can contact you if they have any questions.
- Be sure to have SOBER hosts. Choose responsible individuals to stay sober during the entire party to monitor for noise and other problems.
- Know your guests. Turn away those who you do not know and those who are intoxicated. Do not serve alcohol to anyone under 21; have someone check ID’s to be sure.
- Provide guests with non-alcoholic beverages, as well as food. Keep windows closed and periodically walk around the outside of your house/apartment to check noise levels. Do not block exits in case of fires or other emergencies.
- Do not let anyone drive home intoxicated. After the party remember that clean-up should be done immediately.
