The roof level of the McAllister Parking Deck in downtown State College is temporarily closed after borough staff discovered cracking on a structural beam.
Structural engineers completed a survey on Wednesday and advised “out of an abundance of caution” that the entire roof level of the three-floor facility be closed until additional support structures can be put in place, according to an update from the borough. Work is expected to take place later this week or early next week, depending availability of materials.
The remainder of the 33-year-old, 230-space parking facility has been cleared as safe, according to the borough.
Individuals with permits for the roof level of McAllister Deck will need to park in the Pugh Street Garage until work is completed.
Parking Department staff noticed the crack on a structural beam during a routine walk-through on Tuesday.
In consultation with a structural engineer, the beam was secured with a temporary structure to support the weight. The affected area was closed off, but the deck otherwise remained open.
