Have no fear, parents and children of State College.

The Schlow Library Children’s Department will still offer its regular slate of activities next week, but the physical department will temporarily close for construction.

The department, which is located immediately to your left upon entering the Schlow lobby off Allen Street, will shut its doors from Feb. 1 to 7 for the work.

The Children’s Department will undergo an ‘insulation boost’ according to a press release from the library. This work comes as a response to last winter’s pipe burst, which damaged over 1,500 books and shut down the entire library for two weeks. Contractors have already reinforced insulation in the library’s attic and exterior walls.

Regularly scheduled children’s events, such as the weekly storytime, will be held in alternate locations in the library. Book requests can be made on the library website and will be available for pick-up in the lobby. Mobile bookshelves with options for all ages of children will be available in the lobby as well.

While the Children’s Department will be closed to visitors, our children’s librarians will be available to provide book recommendations, offer early literacy insights, and continue to engage young readers and their families with a variety of educational programs,’ the press release said.

If there are any delays in the Children’s Department’s scheduled reopening date on Feb. 8, they will be announced on the library website.
