As snow fell across the region into the early morning hours Thursday, area school districts closed schools for the day and Penn State announced it would be delaying the start of classes.
State College, Bellefonte, Penns Valley, Bald Eagle and Philipsburg-Osceola school districts all announced schools are closed for the day. At Penn State, classes and activities before 10 a.m. are canceled.
The Centre Region Active Adult Center also is closed on Thursday.
Harris, Patton and Ferguson Townships have declared snow emergencies, meaning vehicles must be removed from the streets until the storm is over and roads have been cleared.
PennDOT said that speed restrictions to 45 miles per hours were in place on I-99 and I-80 in Centre County, and a right lane only truck restriction was in place on westbound Route 322 at Seven Mountains in Mifflin County. The restrictions were expected to remain in place into the daylight hours.
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for much of central Pennsylvania through 10 a.m. Thursday. Snowfall was expected to total 5 to 7 inches locally, with most accumulation coming before dawn.
