Removal of a crane from construction site is expected to cause travel disruptions in downtown State College.

East College Avenue will be closed between Hetzel and Sowers streets from Tuesday, Jan. 9, to Saturday, Jan.13, for demobilization of a crane at the construction site for a 12-story apartment building at 114 Hetzel Street, according to PennDOT and a representative for Massaro Construction Group.

Through-traffic approaching downtown State College on East College Avenue will be detoured to University Drive, Park Avenue and North Atherton Street, according to a PennDOT release, which noted the work is being done by a private contractor and is not associated with a PennDOT project.

Residents of apartments in the area of the crane removal will be granted access via Hetzel Street, a PennDOT spokesperson said.

Massaro may open the road sooner than planned if work progress allows.

The crane has been in place for construction of Chicago-based developer Core Spaces’ ōLiv State College student apartment building, which is expected to open this fall.

The 151-foot mixed-use building will have two floors of retail space and 10 floors with 135 apartment units, including a mix of one-, two-, four- and five-bedroom. Three levels of underground parking will have 172 spaces, including nine for patrons of commercial tenants.

Plans for the project were submitted in 2019 and approved by the borough in 2020. Construction began in 2021 and has involved frequent closures of Hetzel Street.

Four buildings on College Avenue, Hetzel Street and Calder Way were demolished for construction of the new complex. They included Garden House apartments, Eddie’s Bicycles and Hockey Equipment, George’s Floral Boutique, Gio’s Hair Design, Pizza Mia, other apartments and a one-story house on Calder.

Pizza Mia, which has its flagship restaurant in Bellefonte, recently announced it plans to open a location inside ōLiv State College later this year.
