State College Area Roller Derby will celebrate its 12th birthday with an exclusive two-day tournament this weekend.

SCAR Derby’s Birthday Bash Tournament will take place 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. C3 Sports, the derby’s new home, will host the tournament at 200 Ellis Place in State College.

The weekend competition, which marks the only Women’s Flat Track Derby Association tournament on the East Coast this year, comes as part of the organization’s Back on Track series. Eight teams from Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York, including State College’s squad, will match up in two four-team brackets over the weekend. Each team will play twice.

“This is such an exciting time for our league, and we couldn’t be more grateful to be celebrating our 12th birthday with teams we love and admire,” said Elizabeth Kelly, SCAR Derby’s fundraising and sponsorship chair.

Additionally, SCAR will mark its birthday with an alumni game at 6 p.m. on Saturday, featuring both current and former skaters. The weekend will wrap up with a bonus MVP game at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Tickets for the event, including all-weekend passes, are available online or at the door as the competition begins this weekend. Entrance is free for kids 10 and under.

Fans can sit in bleachers or folding chairs, though front-row floor seating is reserved for those 18 and older. Masking is encouraged but not required.

Those who can’t attend SCAR Derby’s weekend tournament in person can stream the action through the WFTDA’s Twitch channel.

Founded in 2010, SCAR Derby is a non-profit, skater-operated league. It joined the WFTDA in 2015 and now competes for an international ranking. Last year, the derby moved its operations to C3 Sports, where it can host competitions and better accommodate fans.
