The Super Bowl is one of the most-watched television events in the world. According to some, it’s also the second-largest day for food consumption in the U.S. (Thanksgiving is the first).

Whether you’re headed out to join what will most likely be a black-and-gold-clad crowd or watching (and eating) from home, plan ahead. With the large number of Steelers fans in the area, local bars and restaurants are expecting a busy day.

A few highlights:

Rotelli State College, at 250 E. Calder Way, calls itself the place to go for Pittsburgh fans, whether they’re rooting for the Penguins in the Stanley Cup Finals or the Steelers in the Super Bowl. Owner Dave Krauth expects a large showing from the State College Steelers contingent, and is preparing a “Pittsburgh Buffet” that will include pierogies and Primanti Bros.-style sandwiches.

For deliveries and take-out, the restaurant has a variety of packages and specials, including four one-topping pizzas, 50 wings, four two-liters of soda, and 24 garlic rolls for $60. No need to place orders early, Krauth says; Rotelli will be cranking out food all day.

Damon’s Grill and Sports Bar, at 1031 E. College Ave., will be hosting a tailgate party on Sunday starting two hours prior to kickoff with prizes and giveaways. The restaurant is also featuring several Super Bowl contests, including a chicken-wing competition at halftime with a $100 Sheetz gift card for the winner, and a chance to win a viewing party for 15 in front of the big screens.

Menu features include 50 wings for $29.99, 100 wings for $49.99, full racks of ribs for $11, and pulled pork packs that feed six for $29.99. All items are available for carryout or delivery, and orders placed by Saturday will be discounted 10 percent. But ordering ahead isn’t required; the restaurant says orders will be ready in ten to 15 minutes regardless of when they’re made.

Zimmie’s Family Restaurant and Catering, at 412 W. College Ave., is featuring a $19.99 “Tailgater,” which includes two large one-topping pizzas, two dozen wings, and a couple two-liter bottles of soda. Place orders well in advance of the game if you want your pizza by kickoff, says owner Nelson Hartley.

Champs Sports Grill, at 1611 N. Atherton St., is offering unlimited chicken wings for $12.95 and $5.50 Coors Light pitchers. Seating is limited, so reserve a table by 6 p.m. Sunday. For fans watching from home, Champs is offering a variety of chicken wings and ribs specials. Orders can be placed all day for pick-up, according to the restaurant.
