Popular retailer Urban Outfitters is planning to open a two-level store in downtown State College, a downtown leader said Tuesday.
The company appears set to open its State College operation at the southwest corner of East College Avenue and McAllister Street, said Jody Alessandrine, executive director of the Downtown Improvement District.
Alessandrine said he does not know when the store may open, and Urban Outfitters could not be reached immediately for comment late Tuesday evening.
But Alessandrine did indicate that the retailer, based in Philadelphia, is preparing two stories of existing space to house the East College Avenue store.
Known for its clothing, footwear and household products, Urban Outfitters counts more than 140 retail locations across North America, Great Britain and Europe. The company is publicly held and traded on the Nasdaq.
In State College, Alessandrine said, Urban Outfitters will occupy street- and upper-level space in the building that also houses Happy Valley Freez and Fetterolf’s Barber Shop. The property is handled by Keystone Real Estate.
Also in the downtown, Alessandrine said, a new store called Campus Candy is preparing to open near East Calder Way and Hiester Street, in the same complex that houses Chipotle and Flesh Decor. Campus Candy appears to be based in Bloomington, Indiana.
And on East College Avenue, Kiwi Frozen Yogurt is planning to open a new location, too. According to Kiwi’s website, its State College operation will open in February at 324 E. College Ave., where Marrara’s Cleaners used to be.
