Penn State receiver Dante Cephas appears to be headed into the transfer portal just a year after arriving in State College, according to a report by the On3 Network. Cephas did not see any snaps in Penn State’s 38-25 loss to Ole Miss in the Peach Bowl, with head coach James Franklin indicating that the receiver did not play due to internal competition in the weeks leading up to the game.

Cephas leaves Penn State having recorded just 246 yards receiving and two touchdowns on 22 receptions after joining the Nittany Lions last offseason as a highly-sought after transfer prospect from Kent State. His receiving yards ranked second on the team among receivers, behind KeAndre Lambert-Smith. For his part, Lambert-Smith recorded just two catches the final 12 quarters of Penn State’s season.

“He shows flashes that obviously he can do some really good things,” Franklin said earlier in the season about Cephas. “It’s about the consistency that I keep talking about. I do think there’s an adjustment period that he’s going through,” Franklin said of Cephas much earlier in the year. “It’s one thing to do it two or three times a season, when you’re watching him play an opponent like Georgia. It’s another thing to do it week-in and week-out in the Big Ten, and I think it’s another thing to do it every day at practice.”

Aside from Lambert-Smith, Penn State will lean on Omari Evans, Trey Wallace and tight end Tyler Warren in the passing game among others both currently on the roster or potentially joining the Nittany Lions from the transfer portal.
