Penn State men’s basketball added another transfer portal pickup to its 2023 roster on Thursday afternoon as former Georgetown center Qudus Wahab announced his intentions to join new head coach Mike Rhoades program. Wahab is the second player in as many days to join Penn State, after North Carolina transfer Puff Johnson did the same on Wednesday afternoon. Wahab hits the scales at 6-foot-11 and 245 pounds.
Wahab is the latest in a long line of roster changes under new head coach Mike Rhoades who is looking to put together the pieces of the Nittany Lions’ 2023-24 roster following the departure of now former head coach Micah Shrewsberry to Notre Dame. Johnson joins former VCU guards Ace Baldwin and Nick Kern and Temple forward Zach Hicks. Rhoades was also able to keep guard Jameel Brown who briefly entered the portal following Shrewsberry’s departure but announced his intentions to stay at Penn State.
Wahab had an interesting career path prior to his time at Penn State. A native of Nigeria who moved to Virginia as a teen, he played two seasons at Georgetown before transferring to Maryland for the 2021-22 then ultimately transferring back to Georgetown the following year. Overall, Wahab started in 25 game last season for the Hoyas averaging 9.6 points and seven rebounds while playing just over 23 minutes per contest.
The 247 Network once rated Wahab as a four-star prospect and the No. 124 best player in the 2019 recruiting cycle. He was primarily recruited by traditional Big East and ACC schools.
