Former Penn State center Juice Scruggs was selected No. 62 overall by the Houston Texans in the second round of the NFL Draft on Friday night. Scruggs heard his name called just one pick following Penn State tight end Brenton Strange who landed with the Jacksonville Jaguars at No. 61 moments earlier.
Scruggs marked the third Penn State player to be picked up in the early stages of this year’s draft. The night began as Joey Porter Jr. was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers to open the second round while Strange would go on later in the evening. Scruggs makes for the 17th player under Penn State coach James Franklin to be drafted in the first two rounds.
Scruggs heads to the next level following a five-year career at Penn State having missed the 2019 season due to injuries sustained during a car crash prior to spring practice that year. Scuggs would appear in seven games in 2020 before starting along the offensive front for the remainder of his career of the following 26 games.
Prior to the 2022 season, Scruggs was voted a team captain. After the conclusion of the campaign, he was gifted an All-Big Ten honorable mention nod by the media and warranted a third-team All-Big Ten selection by coaches. He is the third offensive lineman to be drafted during James Franklin’s tenure at Penn State.
