Penn State wrestling is preparing to hire a Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) Director, according to a listing posted earlier this week on the university’s job board. A program spokesperson confirmed that the role had not been previously filled and is a new position.

The move is not a terribly surprising one for the nation’s premier collegiate wrestling program. While Penn State finds itself coming off yet another national title, with the ever-growing market for athletes through NIL and soon-to-be revenue sharing, head coach Cael Sanderson and his staff will not be immune to the possibility of losing wrestlers to other athletic departments able and willing to offer more lucrative opportunities.

Of course, as four-time national title winner Carter Starocci noted on X (formerly Twitter) in a way only he can, money isn’t the only thing that matters. In many respects, the reputation and success of Penn State wrestling could continue to be an overpowering variable for elite wrestlers looking for a home at the collegiate level. Starocci is slated to return for one final season at Penn State this upcoming fall.

The complete job listing, including job responsibilities, can be seen below.

Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics, a Division 1 and Big Ten Conference Institution, is seeking a dynamic and highly organized Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) Director for the wrestling program.  This position will also aid in recruiting and assist the coaches with their recruiting travel and serve as a host for top prospects and their guests while they are visiting campus.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide administrative support for NIL fundraising and educational efforts.
  • Build relationships with external constituents including but not limited to business leaders, donors and cooperate sponsors.
  • Collaborate with the Penn State wrestling alumni network in fundraising efforts as well as events for athletics and team partners.
  • Maintain effective communication with donors, university partners and external partners.
  • Assist the student-athletes with navigating NIL opportunities as well as help educate them on compliance and university policy. Serve as a liaison between student-athletes and external constituents.
  • Track all incoming NIL gifts, pledges, and donations from supporters of Penn State wrestling.
  • Ensure compliance with university, NCAA, and relevant NIL regulations.
  • Promote and support wrestling with sports camps.
  • Assist student-athletes with career development and placement as they work through and with NIL partners.
  • Assist the head coach and assistant coaches with all aspects of recruiting to include but not limited to travel, host for prospective students, as well as their guests.
