A new mural project in Philipsburg is in the works. The Philipsburg Louis Jenkins Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3450 and officials from the Happy Valley Adventure Bureau are hosting a check presentation to kick off the Post 3450 mural project — the “Honor Our Veterans” mural.
The public is invited to attend the kick-off at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, in the VFW banquet hall, located in downtown Philipsburg at One W. Spruce St., at the intersection of Front and Spruce streets. Philipsburg native and former state representative Lynn Herman will be conducting the check presentation.
“Our communities throughout the county are embracing building art,” Fritz Smith, HVAB president and CEO, said in a statement. “Murals enhance the beauty and character of a location and tell its unique story.”
The VFW was recently awarded a $5,000 grant for tourism from the Centre County Board of Commissioners and HVAB to paint the “Honor Our Veterans” mural to commemorate all veterans of foreign wars.
“This new project will be a wonderful complement to the recently completed mural at the Philipsburg American Legion,” Smith said. “It will be a must-see for local residents and out-of-area visitors who visit town, participate in the Philipsburg Historical Foundation walking tour, attend Philipsburg Heritage Days or come back to visit family and friends.”
HVAB and Visit Clearfield County will be available for guests to learn more about Centre and Clearfield County history at its new heritage/visitor center on Front Street in Philipsburg. The new center also features information about all the things to see and do in the area.
