Penn State quarterback Ta’Quan Roberson announced on Monday morning that he is entering the transfer portal. Roberson will have three years of eligibility remaining at whichever school he ultimately attends and plays for.

Monday’s news was somewhat expected in the era of the transfer portal given that Roberson – who played in the absence of starter Sean Clifford against Iowa and struggled mightily – was increasingly the odd man out of the quarterback room. This only increased with the news that Clifford is set to return in 2022 in addition to the rising star of soon-to-be-sophomore Christian Veilleux who ultimately earned the backup role behind Clifford and piloted Penn State to a victory over Rutgers late in the year.

Additionally in the future Roberson would find himself competing against not only Clifford and Veilleux but incoming freshmen Beau Pribula and five-star prospect Drew Allar as well.

While Clifford’s intentions to return in 2022 were only recently announced, it seemed probable that Veilleux’s rising stock within the program coupled with the arrival of Pribula and Allar would ultimately lead to the departure of someone in Penn State’s quarterback room, the likely candidate being Roberson.

Penn State coach James Franklin had also been critical of Roberson earlier in the year noting that the gap ought to be widening between a player like Roberson who had been in the program for multiple years and Veilleux, a somewhat unassuming quarterback prospect at the time who otherwise ate up the distance between the two players on the field.

Roberson joins quarterbacks Will Levis, Tommy Stevens, Micah Bowens and Michael Johnson Jr. as recent transfers out of Penn State.
