A 35-year-old inmate at Benner Township state prison died early Monday morning, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.
Ramon Ortiz was found unresponsive in his cell at 12:18 a.m. and staff administered CPR until EMS arrive, the department wrote in a release. Ortiz was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:57 a.m.
State police will investigate and the cause of death will be determined by the Centre County Coroner’s Office.
Ortiz was serving a 5-to-10-year sentence for an aggravated assault conviction in Philadelphia. He had been at the Benner Township prison since July 6.
