Centre County registered one new COVID-19 death and 174 more cases of the virus on Tuesday, while Pennsylvania set a single-day high for new infections for the fourth time in the last week.
The death is the county’s 292nd since the start of the pandemic. The new cases bring Centre County’s total to 26,937 (24,348 confirmed and 2,589 probable).
Pennsylvania reported 24,850 new COVID-19 positives, surpassing the previous single-day record of 23,268 set on Friday and bringing the statewide total to 2,119,464. The commonwealth’s seven highest daily case increases of the pandemic have come in the past seven days.
With 169 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, Pennsylvania’s total is now 36,968.
Hospitalizations
Mount Nittany Medical Center is treating 48 COVID-positive inpatients, three more than on Monday, with four in intensive care [+1] and one on a ventilator.
The patients range in age from 29 to 89, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Twelve are fully vaccinated and 36 are not vaccinated.
Pennsylvania has 5,976 COVID-19 inpatients, 347 more than on Monday, with 1,034 in intensive care [+30] and 621 on ventilators [+15]. Statewide hospitalizations increased for the ninth consecutive day and are at their highest level since Dec. 30, 2020.
Prison cases
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has one active COVID-19 case among inmates, two fewer than were listed on Monday, and 18 among staff [-2].
Rockview state prison has three active inmate cases [-24] and 11 among staff [-5].
Both facilities are in Benner Township.
At Benner, 1,509 inmates are fully vaccinated, eight are partially vaccinated and 190 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 303 are fully vaccinated and 325 are not vaccinated.
Rockview has 1,689 inmates who are fully vaccinated, one who is partially vaccinated and 61 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 340 are fully vaccinated and 377 are not vaccinated.
Transmission level
Centre County remains at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.
Across Pennsylvania, 66 of 67 counties are at the highest level on the scale. Forest County is listed as substantial, the second highest level.
Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.
Vaccinations
As of Tuesday morning, 91,275 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 81 since Monday, and 12,871 are partially covered [+57]. Booster doses have been administered to 36,929 county residents [+208].
Among the county’s entire population, 65.9% have received at least one dose and 57% are fully vaccinated, according to the most recent CDC data update. Among adult residents, 71.2% have received at least one dose and 61.5% are fully vaccinated.
Statewide, 74.1% of adults and 63.9% of the total population are fully vaccinated.
Vaccination appointments through Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.
All individuals age 16 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
