COVID-19 Community Level

Centre County is among 15 counties in Pennsylvania that are at the high level for COVID-19 according to new metrics introduced by the Centers for Disease Control on Friday.

COVID-19 community levels measure new cases, but also new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity. At the high level, indoor masking is still recommended. About 37% of counties in the United States, including about 28% of the population, are at the high community level.

At the low and medium levels, there is no recommendation for indoor masking except for individuals at increased risk.

Hospitalizations

According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 17 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Centre County, two more than on Friday, with none in intensive care or on ventilators for the 13th consecutive day.

Statewide, COVID-19 hospitalizations dropped to their lowest level since Aug. 22. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 1,487 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 86 fewer than on Friday, with 277 patients in intensive care [-5] and 164 on ventilators [-13].

The statewide positivity rate was 6.6%, down from 9.7% the previous seven days. The commonwealth had 10,114 new positives between Feb. 18-24, 5,951 fewer than the prior week.

Cases among children

For the 2021-2022 school year, DOH is providing weekly updated case counts for two age groups: 0-4 capturing preschool and daycare age children and 5-18 capturing kindergarten through high school age children. The case counts do not necessarily represent exposure in school or daycare settings and the location of exposure cannot be determined in most cases.

For the week of Feb. 16-22, there were 22 new cases among children in the 0-4 age group and 34 in the 5-18 age group in Centre County. About 23% of all cases in Centre County that week were among children 0-18.
