Centre County recorded 23 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, while Pennsylvania had its largest single-day increase in eight weeks.
The county’s new cases bring its total to 35,482 (31,464 confirmed and 4,018 probable) since March 2020, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Centre County’s rolling seven-day average for new cases is 19.6, down from 20.9 a week ago and up from 8.7 a month ago.
Pennsylvania reported 2,123 new cases — the fifth consecutive day with at least 1,200 and the most since Feb. 26 — to bring the statewide total to 2,806,984.
The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 1,385 up from 1,219 a week ago and 616 a month ago.
Hospitalizations
Three COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Centre County, unchanged from Friday, according to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard. None are in intensive care or on ventilators.
Average daily COVID-19 specific hospitalizations in the county decreased slightly over the last week from 3.9 to 3.4, according to the DOH early warning monitoring dashboard. The percentage of emergency department visits due to COVID-like illness also fell from 2.4% to 1.4%.
Statewide, 509 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, nine more than on Friday, with 69 in intensive care [+1] and 30 on ventilators [-4].
Deaths
DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents for the 13th consecutive day, keeping the total at 348.
With 10 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is 44,602.
Positivity rate
Centre County’s PCR testing positivity rate for the week of April 15-21 was 7.3%, down from 7.9% the previous seven days, according to the early warning monitoring dashboard. The rate was 19th highest among Pennsylvania’s 67 counties.
The county had 105 new cases for that seven-day period, 13 fewer than the prior week.
The statewide positivity rate was 7.2%, up from 5.9% the previous seven days. The commonwealth had 7,115 new positives between April 15-21, 688 more than the prior week.
Community Level
Centre County remains at the “low” community level for COVID-19 for the seventh consecutive week, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s latest update on Friday.
Community levels measure new cases, new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity to determine mitigation guidelines. At the low level, there is no recommendation for indoor masking.
Statewide, 63 of 67 counties are at the low level, with Tioga at medium and Bradford, Sullivan and Susquehanna at high. At the medium level, the CDC recommends masks indoors in public for those at risk of severe illness. At the high level, universal indoor public masking is recommended.
Cases among children
For the week of April 12-18, there were 10 new COVID-19 cases in the 0-4 age group and 19 among the 5-18 age group in Centre County. About 25% of all cases in Centre County that week were among children 0-18.
Since Aug. 16, there have been 3,396 cases among individuals between the ages of 0 and 18 in Centre County — 706 between the ages of 0-4 and 2,690 between the ages of 5 and 18 — representing about 19% of all cases during that time.
For the 2021-2022 school year, DOH is providing weekly updated case counts for two age groups: 0-4 capturing preschool and daycare age children and 5-18 capturing kindergarten through high school age children. The case counts do not necessarily represent exposure in school or daycare settings and the location of exposure cannot be determined in most cases.
Prison cases
Centre County’s two state prisons — Benner and Rockview — have no COVID-19 cases among inmates or staff, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.
At Benner, 1,420 inmates are fully vaccinated, 24 are partially vaccinated and 207 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 306 are fully vaccinated and 323 are not vaccinated.
At Rockview, 1,703 inmates are fully vaccinated, two are partially vaccinated and 80 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 350 are fully vaccinated and 368 are not vaccinated.
Vaccinations
As of Saturday morning, 95,318 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 31 since Friday, and 14,225 are partially covered [+3]. Booster doses have been administered to 50,476 county residents [+29].
Among the county’s entire population, 70.2% have received at least one dose, 59.7% are fully vaccinated and 51.7% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75.6% have received at least one dose, 63.9% are fully vaccinated and 54.3% have received a booster.
Statewide, 77.7% of adults and 68.2% of the total population are fully vaccinated.
Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.
All individuals age 12 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot. All individuals 50 and older and certain immunocompromised individuals are now eligible for a second booster shot.
