Centre County reported 23 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday to bring its total to 17,399, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
Pennsylvania surpassed 3,000 cases for the second time in three days, a mark last reached in late April. The 3,637 added on Saturday were the most since April 28 and bring the statewide total to 1,265,540.
The county also reported 75 negative test results for a total of 74,585. Statewide, there were 9,178 new negatives for a total of 5,060,254.
Centre County remains at the substantial level for community transmission of COVID-19 — the second highest on the Centers for Disease Control scale — as of the CDC’s latest county-level data update on Saturday afternoon. Neighboring Blair, Clinton and Clearfield counties are at the highest level, while Huntingdon, Mifflin and Union are also at substantial.
For the week of Aug. 13-19, the Centre County’s PCR testing positivity rate was 6.2%, up from 4.4% the previous seven days, according to the updated Department of Health early warning monitoring dashboard. The rate was tied for 19th lowest among Pennsylvania 67 counties.
The county had 118 new cases for that seven-day period, 32 more than the prior week.
The statewide positivity rate was 6.9%, up from 6.0% the previous seven days. It was the seventh consecutive week Pennsylvania’s positivity rate increased after 12 consecutive weeks of decreases. The commonwealth had 11,669 new positives between Aug. 13-19, up from 9,368 the prior week.
According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 11 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Centre County as of Saturday morning, including two in intensive care and one on a ventilator — all unchanged from Friday.
Average daily COVID-specific hospitalizations in Centre County decreased from 13.6 to 12.4 for the week of Aug. 13-19.
Mount Nittany Medical Center has had 39 COVID admissions so far in August, eclipsing the 37 it had for the entire month of July. The average daily census of COVID-19 patients this month is 12, double the average census last month
Pennsylvania has 1,388 COVID-19 inpatients, an increase of 62 since Friday, with 352 in intensive care [+17] and 166 on ventilators [+2]. COVID hospitalizations are at their highest level in three months.
Statewide average daily COVID hospitalizations increased from 834.7 to 1,181.7 for the week of Aug. 13-19.
DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents on Saturday, keeping the total at 230.
With 16 new COVID-19 deaths statewide, Pennsylvania’s total is now 28,075.
An estimated 95% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, according to a DOH calculation.
As of Saturday morning, 79,604 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated and 6,269 are partially covered.
Vaccination appointments for ages 12 and older are available through Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.
CVIM and Mount Nittany Health also are now offering the third vaccine dose recommended for people whose immune systems are moderately to severely compromised.
