Centre County registered three new COVID-19 deaths and 332 more cases of the virus on Friday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
The county now has 304 deaths attributed to COVID-19, including 15 reported this month.
The new cases mark the county’s third largest single-day increase and bring the local total to 29,909 (26,928 confirmed and 2,981 probable).
Pennsylvania reported 26,610 new COVID-19 positives to bring the statewide total to 2,401,681.
With 173 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the commonwealth’s total is now 38,426.
Hospitalizations
Mount Nittany Medical Center has 44 COVID-19 inpatients, three fewer than on Thursday, with seven in intensive care [-1] and seven on ventilators [+2].
The patients range in age from 25 to 93, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Twelve are fully vaccinated and 32 are not vaccinated.
For the ninth consecutive day, Pennsylvania hospitals have a record number of COVID-19 inpatients. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard 7,516 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized statewide, 57 more than on Thursday, with 1,157 patients in intensive care [+43] and 721 on ventilators [+26].
Positivity rate
Centre County’s PCR testing positivity rate for the week of Jan. 7-13 was 28.6%, down from 30.6% the previous seven days, according to DOH’s updated early warning monitoring dashboard. The rate was tied for 19th lowest among Pennsylvania’s 67 counties.
The county had 1,679 new cases for that seven-day period, 180 more than the prior week.
The statewide positivity rate was 35.3%, up from 34.2%, the previous seven days. The commonwealth had 158,354 new positives between Jan. 7-13, 15,664 more than the prior week.
Transmission level
All 67 counties in Pennsylvania are at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.
Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.
Cases Among Children
For the 2021-2022 school year, DOH is providing weekly updated case counts for two age groups: 0-4 capturing preschool and daycare age children and 5-18 capturing kindergarten through high school age children. The case counts do not necessarily represent exposure in school or daycare settings and the location of exposure cannot be determined in most cases.
For the week of Jan. 5-11, there were 91 new cases among children in the 0-4 age group and 328 in the 5-18 age group in Centre County. About 25% of all cases in Centre County that week were among children 0-18.
Since Aug. 16, there have been 2,178 cases among individuals between the ages of 0 and 18 in Centre County — 390 between the ages of 0-4 and 1,788 between the ages of 5 and 18 — representing about 19% of all cases during that time.
Prison cases
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has two active COVID-19 case among inmates, one more than on Thursday, and 18 among staff [-1].
Rockview state prison has 16 active inmate cases [+3] and 57 among staff [+3].
Both facilities are in Benner Township.
At Benner, 1,503 inmates are fully vaccinated, 13 are partially vaccinated and 193 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 307 are fully vaccinated and 321 are not vaccinated.
Rockview has 1,699 inmates who are fully vaccinated, one who is partially vaccinated and 58 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 342 are fully vaccinated [+2] and 375 are not vaccinated [-2].
Vaccinations
As of Friday morning, 92,092 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 103 since Thursday, and 13,578 are partially covered [+74]. Booster doses have been administered to 40,255 county residents [+305].
Among the county’s entire population, 67.2% have received at least one dose, 57.5% are fully vaccinated and 43% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 72.5% have received at least one dose, 61.9% are fully vaccinated and 45.4% have received a booster.
Statewide, 74.8% of adults and 64.7% of the total population are fully vaccinated.
Vaccination appointments through Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.
All individuals age 12 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
