Centre County Adds 6 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 832 New Positives

Centre County reported six new COVID-19 cases on Saturday to bring its total to 16,853, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. It marked the fifth time this week the county had a single-digit increase.

Pennsylvania also added fewer than 1,000 positives for the fifth time this week. The 832 new cases bring the statewide total to 1,201,375.

The county had 67 additional negative test results to increase its total to 69,599. Across Pennsylvania, there were 5,670 new negatives for a total of 4,594,728.

After declining for seven consecutive weeks, Centre County saw a slight uptick in its positivity rate last week. For the week of May 21-27, the county’s PCR testing positivity rate was 3.9%, up from 3.7% the previous seven days, according to the updated DOH early warning monitoring dashboard

Pennsylvania’s statewide positivity rate was 3.8%, down from 4.5% the previous seven days and marking a decline for the sixth consecutive week.

According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 14 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Centre County, with one in intensive care and on a ventilator.

Through Friday, Mount Nittany Medical Center has had 78 COVID-related admissions and an average daily census of 16 COVID inpatients in May. By comparison, in April the hospital had 153 COVID admissions and an average daily census of 25 COVID inpatients.

The declining number of hospitalizations led Mount Nittany to update its visitation policy last week to allow one visitor per inpatient at the medical center during visiting hours of 2-6 p.m.

Statewide, Pennsylvania has 1,076 COVID-19 inpatients, a decrease of 31 since Friday, with 268 in intensive care [-8] and 160 on ventilators [-2].

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents, keeping the county’s total at 224.

With 16 new COVID-19 deaths reported statewide, Pennsylvania’s total is now 27,203.

As of Saturday morning, 68,621 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated and 13,364 are partially covered.

Vaccination appointments for ages 12 and older are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov. The state-run Regional Vaccination Clinic at the Bryce Jordan Center offers vaccines to individuals 18 and older by appointment or walk-in.

“As we head into the first holiday of summer, remember that the vaccine is the best way to ensure your protection against COVID-19,” Dr. Upendra Thaker, Mount Nittany Medical Center chief medical officer, said on Friday. “Also, keep in mind that the vaccine is about more than just you. It’s about all those around you – your grandparents, parents and friends. This vaccine is one step closer to being back together again.

“Until more people are fully vaccinated, please continue to consistently practice safety measures including masking in crowds, frequent hand washing and social distancing.”
