Centre County reported 60 new COVID-19 cases on Friday to bring its total to 10,985, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Pennsylvania added 9,643 positives, bringing the statewide total to 834,048. While it was the state’s highest single-day total in three weeks, Friday’s count includes backlogged antigen testing data from urgent care centers, with 4,052 of the new cases having had their specimens collected more than a week ago, according to the health department.

The county also had 77 additional negative test results, increasing its total to 56,473. Across Pennsylvania there were 10,401 new negatives for a total of 3,611,366.

DOH reported two new COVID-19 deaths among Centre County residents to bring the total to 193.

With 159 new COVID-19 deaths reported Friday, Pennsylvania’s total is now 21,462.

Mount Nittany Medical Center is currently treating 28 COVID-19 patients, one fewer than on Thursday. The patients range in age from 13 to 96, a hospital spokesperson said.

Since Jan. 1, Mount Nittany has admitted 203 COVID positive patients, with an average census of 42 COVID inpatients per day. That puts the hospital on track for a decline from December, when it had 246 COVID admissions and an average census of 49 COVID inpatients per days.

Statewide, 3,586 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, including 699 in intensive care and 425 on ventilators.

On Friday morning, Mount Nittany Health opened an online self-scheduling system for those in Phase 1A of Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution plan, including residents age 65 and over, as well as those age 16 to 64 with high-risk medical conditions.

With high demand, all available appointments — more than 2,000 — were quickly filled for the first two weeks in February, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Nirmal Joshi said in a statement.

Mount Nittany has requested “significant additional quantities” of the vaccines from DOH, which manages the supply for Pennsylvania.

“Our goal is to vaccinate as many people as soon as possible,” Joshi said. “Unfortunately, at this time, demand for the vaccine greatly exceeds supply locally, across the state, and across the nation. We will open more clinics as DOH provides us with additional vaccine.”

More appointment dates will be announced when DOH confirms Mount Nittany’s next vaccine shipment.

Nursing and personal care homes in Centre County reported two new COVID-19 cases among residents. A total of 16 long-term care facilities in the county have had a combined 652 resident cases, 139 employee cases and 153 resident deaths.

An estimated 81% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, per a health department calculation.

Among Pennsylvania’s total cases, 726,031 are confirmed and 108,017 are probable. In Centre County, 10,170 are confirmed and 815 are probable.
